ABSTRACT

Mrs Thom pson’s version o f this well-known ballad begins in the m iddle o f the story, the antecedent action o f which runs thus: a young lord, thirsting for adventure, goes abroad and is taken prisoner by the Turks. He com plains o f his fate and is overheard by the daughter o f his captor, who frees him and supplies him with provisions, a horse and a dog. They exchange vows o f love and loyalty, swearing that neither will m arry other partners for seven years. At the end o f the allotted time she sets out to find him and arrives at his door on his wedding day.
