ABSTRACT

Anyone fam iliar with this very popular song might find our A-text somewhat startling. Not only has General Blucher (probably en route from ‘The G rand Conversation with N apoleon ’ ) usurped Bonaparte’ s role as the narrator’ s father, but he has becom e the object o f an apparently fruitless search by his distracted son. These departures from the original plot have succeeded in transform ing a rather grand historical song into an inferior exam ple o f a Victorian tear-jerker.
