ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the fair trade labeling and its reflections of and implications for labor. It explores the key elements of the seminal literature of power and privilege, coalition-building and community change, and advocacy research to provide a foundational framework to achieve an expansion of environmental justice that can help the plight of farmworkers in US agriculture. Numerous organizations are working for the betterment of farmworkers in US agriculture, using many of the frameworks of social change and in ways that expand environmental justice. According to the Food Chain Workers Alliance, there are 484 organizations in the United States focused on labor in agriculture, and they divide these into unions, worker centers, advocacy organizations, and service organizations, with the largest number falling in the latter group. La Via Campesina is an international organization focused on food sovereignty. Líderes Campesinas is an organization in California that is focused on women farmworkers' rights.
