ABSTRACT

The following piece by Steven Youngblood was published in the Peace Journalist magazine in October 2014, in the immediate aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.

Seldom have the stakes been higher for the media as they moved in to cover the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri. (Brown, an unarmed young black man, was shot by a police officer.) Responsible coverage could help inform and empower the community to react nonviolently, while irresponsible coverage could fuel the flames of racial discord while demonizing Brown.
