ABSTRACT

Laurillard examined the various ways Internet platforms are designed to interact with viewers. She identified five levels of viewer interaction with electronic media, namely, narrative level, interactive level, communicative level, adaptive level and productive level. Legal and more mundane levels of deception have been reported in various Internet computer-mediated communication channels such as resume sites like LinkedIn and online dating sites. Focusing on the construction of online identities, the chapter looks at self-presentation, identity deception and the co-construction of the online self. Given the negative aspects of some online communications it might not be surprising to learn that a significant number of people report being concerned about their online privacy. Revenge porn websites offer the potential for online deception. While the majority of responses to revenge porn are sexual and image based abuses aimed at the pictured person, some people also disclose shared meanings, stories and experiences.
