ABSTRACT

Teaching embouchure in the early stage involves the small piece of the flute. Probably the best indicator of whether a student is suited for flute study is the ability to make a ballpark accurate sound on the head joint. Vibrato is applied as a standard technique to both enhance and project tone on the flute, oboe, bassoon, and saxophone. Among professional flutists, there is increasing acceptance of 'forward tonguing' or 'French tonguing'. The traditional approach to teaching tonguing, to use terminology from psychology, is a holistic approach. Multiple tonguing is possible on all woodwind instruments. Harmonics are pitches that are produced by fingering a fundamental note and over blowing such that pitches in the harmonic series result. A rubric is an evaluative tool. The rubric that follows makes clear the expectations of the university student playing the flute as he or she approaches the end of an intensive three to four weeks of study.
