ABSTRACT

The following transcriptions and analyses should serve to further clarify core principles of Ornette’s improvisational style (or system, if you will) in a more traditional way. These analyses are for the meticulous musical scholar who is hungry for a more specific understanding of exactly what is going on in Ornette’s musical approach called Harmolodics. To underscore the deep influence he has had on other Jazz masters, I have also included improvisations by Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, and Branford Marsalis, with companion analyses.
