ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses about relative clauses, relative pronouns with prepositions and how to express the relative pronoun 'whose' in Afrikaans language with some examples. In English the people use a number of words to introduce a relative clause; they have the choice between 'that', 'who', 'whom' or 'which', but in Afrikaans there is only one form of the relative pronoun, which is wat. Relative 'that', 'which', 'who' and 'whom' can be used in combination with a preposition. Without a preposition, the relative in Afrikaans is wat, as people have seen, but in combination with a preposition they will need to make a choice between wie and waar. The people saw that 'whose' in a question is expressed by wie se. The same form is used to express 'whose' as a relative pronoun when the antecedent is personal. Wie se can also be used in combination with a preposition.
