ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about coordinate clause, subordinate clause, the three meaning of the word toe and the special functions of the preposition vir. Longer sentences of two clauses joined together by means of 'and', 'but', 'or' and 'because'. But normally when two clauses are joined in Afrikaans each with its own subject and finite verb, the people need to apply a change of word order. Only when the joining word is one of the above four words, no change in word order is necessary. The first meaning of Toe is used when talking about one occasion in the past, although it is not usually necessary for the verb in the same or subsequent clauses to be in the past as toe is in itself sufficient indication that the event occurred in the past. The second meaning of Toe renders the adverb 'then' with reference to something that occurred on one occasion in the past.
