ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to negate a sentence with examples. The negative particles are also used in combination with a nie placed at the end of the sentence for the sake of simplicity the people call this the second nie. If a sentence consists of only a subject and a verb, the second nie is not required, but with other negatives the second nie is optional in such cases as they end up standing next to each other. Only one nie is required if a sentence consists of only a subject, one verb and a pronominal object. However, in a sentence consisting of two clauses, where the first clause is negated, the second nie is placed at the end of the second clause, not at the end of the first. In colloquial Afrikaans the first and the second nie are commonly assimilated to the final consonant of a preceding word in spoken Afrikaans.
