ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about colloquial arabic which provides a step-by-step course in Levantine Arabic as it is used today. It includes the features such as: Introductions and greetings, Leave-taking, Cultural awareness, Grammar, Pronouns, The definite article. When meeting people for the first time, people would usually introduce yourself. In subsequent units, everyone will learn more advanced ways of taking your leave. Just like introductions are used to start a conversation, leave-taking is a polite form of ending the conversation. The goal of the grammar explanations in this book is to foster understanding of the dialogues presented in each unit. It is rather unlikely to find a grammar book for LA, unless it targets learners of this dialect. The grammar targets in this unit are essential for understanding the dialogues and using them. Therefore, if the definite article precedes a noun that begins with a coronal sound, it deletes and, as compensation, the first sound is geminated.
