ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the Arab souk and bargaining at the market of Arab cultures. Shopping in the Arab world is gradually yielding to globalization. There can still be some variation in the types of goods offered, or the kinds of food available, but a more authentic shopping experience continues to exist in old markets still resisting the wave of globalization. The best place to look for such an experience is the "old madinah" of any major Arab town. Visiting these places is part and parcel of trying to understand the soul of the Arab city. The reason for bargaining is that rarely does anyone pay the price that the seller asks for at first. Sometimes, this will be a fast exchange: the seller asks for a given price, the buyer gives a very low counter offer, which results in the seller going away and not even discussing the deal. So, it would be very inappropriate to accept the offer.
