ABSTRACT

Although theoretical frameworks provide a limited utility in learning helping skills, understanding counseling theories can assist people as a student affairs practitioner in developing techniques to use in your work with students. As described by Hackney theory can be used to define the nature of the helping relationship, conceptualize the nature of the presenting problem(s), and define the resulting goals or desired outcomes and related interventions. Essentially, a theory provides a systematic approach to understanding someone's presenting concerns and struggles and helping the person work through them. Adler's Individual Psychology is referred to as a personality theory, accounting for the developmental, social-psychological, and cognitive. Choice theory perspective emphasizes that individuals behave in ways to meet basic and universal needs. A cognitive behavioral approach focuses on identifying and changing illogical and distorted thinking that leads to and/or serves as a catalyst for disturbing behavior and feelings.
