ABSTRACT

The Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet (IPDI) of George Washington University conducted a survey of registered California voters in the summer of 2006 to determine who paid attention to political blogs. The first presidential campaign blog was that of Howard Dean, created in 2003, then blogs were used extensively by John Kerry and George W. Bush in the 2004 general election. Since that time, presidential and many other national and state candidates have used blogs to communicate with followers. Just as online communication has profoundly changed the way we interact with one another, so too, have political campaigns made enormous changes in the way they communicate with people, the way people communicate with campaigns, and the way citizens, activists and voters communicate with one another about elections and campaigns. During the 2004 presidential campaign, Internet audio and video files were added to the arsenal of communication tools. The most watched such web video file came from JibJab Media.
