ABSTRACT

Externalizing Migration is a much-needed publication, especially since practices of outsourcing and remote management are in most cases almost completely hidden from the public. Border control and migration management; however, have also been enhanced by modern electronic technology combining physical fences with virtual fences, complex radar systems or heartbeat sensors. The term migration management has become frequently used not only in political discussions but also in an increasing number of academic publications. Migration management is often used simply as a synonym for migration politics, employed without much, if any, knowledge of the implications of talking about management versus politics, rules and laws. Referring to management instead of speaking about actual policy-making and policy-implementation was arguably based on the outright desire to take the "politics" problematization, politicization, political debate. It clearly points to the need of continued and further expanded critical scholarship on remote migration control and management, and a better communication of research results to the public.
