ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a version of an integral approach to psychotherapy. By offering a parsimonious set of conceptual tools with which to integrate clinical information spanning myriad dimensions of human beings and their afflictions, an integral sensibility facilitates comprehensive, unified treatment. Mental health practitioners' integral psychotherapists are further challenged to develop a deeper understanding of how intersubjective (LL) and macrosocial-systemic (LR) factors and dynamics are pertinent to therapy. While discussing the role of theory with regard to basic principles of psychological change, M. Mahoney emphasized that the most important task is to choose a "conceptual base camp" from which to operate while one continues the explorations that constitute "The Work" of learning to comfort and to facilitate development. The goals of the integral endeavor are ultimately practical ones aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of psychotherapy for as many patients as possible.
