ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a reflection on how international law addresses the regulatory challenges associated with the protection and the promotion of ILK, and on what lessons can be learnt to address ILK in the IPBES context. It considers the role of ILK systems in the light of various relevant instruments and processes, as well as their potential shortcomings. It also considers the newly established participatory framework under the so-called IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, with a particular focus on indigenous peoples and local communities’ (IPLCs) representation challenges. The chapter concludes by highlighting risks associated with the work of IPBES, but also opportunities for strengthening global protection of the rights of ILK holders and biocultural diversity.
