ABSTRACT

This chapter is a case study of Australian Muslim youth. It looks at how they take up and construct counter-narratives. Australia is a useful country to examine because it is primarily a nation of immigrants, yet lacks formal provision to protect human rights. It has given sustained attention to Australian Muslim youth. It demonstrates that young Australian Muslims not only react to the moral panic over Islam in Australia but creatively produce their own stories of where they stand. When Islamist attacks take place anywhere in the world, Muslim families have negative experiences. They are the first to suffer the consequences of terrorism. Some young Australians have gone overseas to join jihad and some acts of Islamist terrorism have taken place on Australian soil. On Australian soil there have been relatively few deadly Islamist terrorist attacks, and intelligence agencies seem to have been quite effective in preventing actual attacks.
