ABSTRACT

This chapter describes simulations that entail manipulating physical objects such as assembling a piece of equipment or performing physical actions such as navigating through unfamiliar territory. The purpose of Physical simulations is typically to assess participants' ability to perform physical actions in a safe and contained environment prior to participants being exposed to high-risk or dangerous job conditions. The advantages of Physical simulations are the ability to give participants a standardized high-fidelity experience that approximates job conditions while minimizing expense and/or risks to themselves or others. The goal of a Physical simulation is typically to assess candidate's technical expertise in a safe and controlled environment. Physical simulations will require interaction with the physical environment and may require the construction of specialized equipment. The technology used in the simulation itself should mirror the actual job environment. Physical simulations often require administrators to be present throughout the simulation to ensure the simulation is working correctly, flows smoothly, and is safe.
