ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a different way of thinking about technology and its role in learning analytics. Technology is considered to be a transformational force in the work of many fields and disciplines empowering the scope and power of professional action. Adaptive e-learning seeks to leverage a customization potential under the guise of an intelligent tutoring system that, while not intended to disintermediate the instructor, seeks to replicate good practice. Agent-based design is an expression of theoretical developments in complex systems, artificial intelligence, and technological innovation that make possible the modeling of the behavior of individual agents. The speech pathology program design team at Cape Southern University decides to take a different approach by employing agent-based design to create software for their program review. Emergent feedback is the source data of a new approach to learning analytics that focuses on the true meaning of learning.
