ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book identifies the connections between traditional learning analytics and an emergent feedback approach. It describes the game-changing benefits for the modern university of becoming an emergent feedback organization (EFO). The analytics literature makes much of the need to fund analytics as a core business activity, if it is to have a chance of success. The current analytics approaches require expertise not only from technical support staff, but also from users of the data. Data modeling and data infrastructure are very technical pursuits, and it is therefore not surprising to see increasing calls in the literature for investment in professionals trained in these areas. EFOs will shift the focus of the online learning conversation from space and place to the way technology can virtualize core pedagogical transactions, making it possible to extend agency at scale.
