ABSTRACT

The chapter first considers the links between transport, mobility and the city and then continues by exploring urban transport and mobility issues at different scales. At the global level, the chapter considers urban connectivity, the growth in air transport and the contribution of urban transport to global concerns such as carbon emissions, climate change and pollution. At the intra-urban level, the chapter examines the 'governmentality' of transport and the challenges for urban transport policy and planning. The chapter shows transport and mobility as an embodied practice, highlighting the importance of considering movement as a cultural practice, beyond an instrumental act of physical displacement. There is recognition that 'technological fixes' to existing motorized transport and infrastructure alone will not tackle wider sustainability issues and the transition to post-carbon economies and cities. In the contemporary context, cities are seen as places where a range of increasingly globalized flows are embedded and entangled in a mesh of linkages, connections and relations across space.
