ABSTRACT

This conclusion chapter presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the previous chapters of this book. The book has investigated the cultural significance and understanding of the Islamic, Turk within the development of German print culture from the late fifteenth to early seventeenth centuries. It has established that the cultural events taking place in German-speaking areas of the Holy Roman Empire, including the religious turmoil of the Reformation, directly influenced Northern and Central European interpretations of the Ottoman Empire. It has shown how images of the Turk in the sixteenth century could be employed to illustrate texts providing commentaries on society, or to give expression to popular beliefs at a time of religious and social change. By bringing together many seemingly disparate images, this book has strived to provide a comprehensive understanding of sixteenth-century German visual attitudes to the Turk.
