ABSTRACT

Much of the preparation for life as a citizen-soldier began in school. It was here that children learned about their roles as citizens and future defenders of their country. The toy, which was shown in television commercials being played with by boys in military uniforms, came complete with a satellite and miniature Atlas and Titan intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Geiger counter produced by the A. C. Gilbert Company in the early 1950s, however, did detect radioactive substances and came with a small bottle of uranium ore with which children could test the machine. Also available for curious children to play with were toy nuclear reactors. The most desirable thing for a parent to do was to send their children to the countryside, where the chances of escaping destruction were much better. Those who were unwilling or lacked the ability to do so should prepare a shelter in the family home.
