ABSTRACT

This epilogue very briefly tells some of that story, concentrating in particular on the second and third generations, critical in the evolution of many family firms. In fact, the governance and management of the firm at the dawn of the twentieth-century reflected the workings of crisis and reaction intimately tied to family dynamics. The campaign resumed in 1906, with purchase of Onions and Company of Birmingham. Another pause ensued, followed by conversion to public limited liability status in 1919, which event ushered in a second wave of take-overs that saw the absorption of Jenks Brothers Ltd., The British Tool and Engineering Company, and eventually Moore and Wright Ltd., which firm brought with it Avia Steel and Tool Company Ltd. The significance of the foreign operations to the development and future of the firm at that time was reflected in the very considerable space given to tracing the history of the Calcutta operation.
