ABSTRACT

A number of psalms, especially those in the category of hymns, focus on creation and its diverse wonders as a motivation for the worshippers to praise God. These are psalms of praise and thanksgiving. The focus on ecological issues, there are two themes in these two bodies of literature that will particularly occupy the attention in this chapter: creation's praise and the de-centring of humanity. As Hans-Joachim Kraus puts it, in his comments on this Psalm: The entire world is supported and controlled by deeds of God, toward which all elements and creatures are oriented the entire creation is open to Yahweh; it is absolutely dependent on him, it dies without him. The idea that creation not only stands as a witness to God's greatness and glory but also participates in the calling to praise and worship God implies a broader focus than is conveyed by the generally anthropocentric theological tradition, with its concentration on the human vocation.
