ABSTRACT

We know from experience that the vast majority of risk control measures deteriorate over time. For this reason, we need to monitor risk control measures, establish the extent to which they are still effective and take corrective action where necessary. This process is monitoring conformity with standards, and is the subject of this chapter. However, it is usual to combine the monitoring of risk control measures with that of conformity with other health and safety standards, such as document availability and record-keeping. For this reason, for the rest of this chapter, ‘monitoring’ will be used to mean monitoring of conformity with health and safety standards in general.
