ABSTRACT

If widget production is thought of in this abstract way, it is possible to consider how best to employ human beings in the system. The arguments might be as follows: • raw materials – with a few minor exceptions, human beings are hopeless as a source of raw materials • energy – humans are good at supplying energy for short periods but they can only supply limited amounts,

and if they have to supply more than these limited amounts, they become damaged • consistency – humans are hopelessly inconsistent when compared with machines • self-monitoring – humans are quite good at spotting errors but they cannot do this consistently (see the

previous point).
