ABSTRACT

If you are reading this book ‘with attention’, you will be aware mainly of the book, the words being read and their meaning. However, you can voluntarily change the focus of your attention. For example, you can make yourself aware of the feel of your clothes and the noises around you simply by making the effort to do so. When a person ‘attends’ to a particular aspect of the environment, he or she gives it priority in information processing terms. Other aspects of the environment considered irrelevant for the time being are ‘filtered out’ by the attention mechanism.
