ABSTRACT

The term ‘pollution’ was introduced in Chapter 1.3. It is the general term for a range of adverse environmental impacts arising from outputs from processes and other activities (environmental ‘aspects’). Pollution results from the introduction of a substance or energy into the environment that will be detrimental to human health and comfort, harm valuable species and ecosystems, interfere with the food chain, damage property, impair amenity or otherwise interfere with legitimate uses of the environment. This chapter discusses the principles supporting the management of pollutants as outputs from business activities.
