After completing this chapter, the reader should be able to:

define anaemia and identify the principal causes;

describe the underlying pathophysiology associated with each form of anaemia responding to drug therapy;

identify the various supplements used in nutritional anaemias, considerations relating to their administration and any common adverse effects;

state the mechanism of action and the adverse reactions of the agents used in the treatments of anaemia associated with chronic renal failure and aplastic anaemia.
