ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, we have explored a wide range of writing tools that enable elementary and middle-school students to create effective narratives. However, a key question remains: “How should teachers assess these narrative-writing tools?” I recommend evaluating students’ narratives in a way that mirrors the toolkit approach to instruction: by separately evaluating students’ use of each of the key components of narrative writing. I suggest doing this by using distinct rubrics that represent the particular standards of quality for each aspect of effective narrative writing.
