ABSTRACT

Turkish Cypriot clubs, a boundary has been created that has not changed – at no time in the past 60 years have the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot clubs played in a football league containing teams representing these two communities. The Turkish Cypriot clubs leaving the competition shows the barriers that were created between the groups and the different discourses the two groups have to explain their departure justify the creation of the boundary that exists. Sport was very much included in the tension that existed within society at the time and was able to be used to reinforce ethnic differences.
