ABSTRACT
The basin receives the flow from its tributary drainage areas,
primarily from the Detroit and Maumee Rivers, and the wastewater
effluents from a number of municipalities and industries. The
transport within the system is affected by these river flows, dis
persion within the basin, and exchange with the central portion of
Lake Erie. Figure 16 shows the segmentation of the system (5 littoral
and 2 central segments), which permits a realistic portrayal of the
transport phenomena, as well as reasonable representation of the
concentrations in both the littoral and central zones of the
western basin. The advective components of the transport, as shown,
are affected primarily by the flow of the Detroit River through
the basin. Field observations as well as a hydrodynamic model
of the system provided information on the magnitude of this velocity
