ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the employment challenges faced by education leaders in maintaining an appropriately skilled staff team. It explains the importance of an appropriate staffing profile to learning and teaching. The chapter discusses some of the pressures and issues regarding staff recruitment. It examines the options for employing staff in organisations. The chapter describes different staff contracts and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. It explores some of the key employment issues facing leaders in education settings. The also examines challenges of recruitment, choices regarding types of employment contracts and options for filling vacancies using home and/or international staff. Education leaders must take ultimate responsibility for leading their organisation. However, as the head of the organisation the leader must take control of the bigger strategic issues and be the driving force behind these initiatives, spearheading organisational change. Maintaining the appropriate balance of staff at all times is one of the important roles for any leader working in education.
