The separate terms background investigation and background check mean nearly the same. Where a difference exists it is in the depth or intensity of the inquiry. Both practices start with a routine inquiry, that is to say, a check that for the most part will verify, refute, or cast doubt on an application made by a person seeking to receive something of value or importance, such as a job, a job transfer, or a loan of money.
