ABSTRACT

Some synthesis techniques can be repeatedly extended to add additional complexity and tonal variation; for example, adding more sinusoidal oscillators to an additive synthesizer (Chapter 16), or more filters to a subtractive synthesizer (Chapter 17). Rather than considering how the underlying synthesis forms might be extended, it is often the case that blending the output of multiple synthesis sections in parallel (also known as stacking or layering) can produce increased tonal sophistication with modest effort. The sections might be very similar (such as a number of wavetable oscillators), or they might be quite different (such as a filtered noise generator, a sample playback form, and a sinusoidal additive form).
