ABSTRACT

The usability of an audio process does not only depend on the underlying process form, such as how a flanger or an additive synthesizer is constructed. The process also requires a suitable practical framework in which it can operate. Firstly, there must be sufficient processing capacity within the system for the chosen application and suitable data management. For example, parallel process paths are required for multichannel modifiers and polyphonic synthesizers. However, there are more subtle ways in which a system is designed in order to achieve the required results. For example:

• Mapping a tonal parameter value from a control input in such a way that equal steps in input result in equal perceptual steps in sound character.
