ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the origins of dyads, introduce some basic types of dyads and highlight some important considerations related to bi-relational development and wicked problems. The chapter explores some of the cultural origins of dyads to add weight to the claim that the construct is pervasive and persistent in human knowledge and knowing. Isomorphic dyads represent polarities on a continuum or spectrum where both polarities relate directly to the same phenomenon or concept. Orthogonal dyads represent different but interdependent dimensions or aspects of a phenomenon. Dyads and dyadic relationships are ubiquitous structures that find expression in the wicked problems. Are dyads neurophysiological constructions that originate from the simplest bifurcations of neural networks and the efficiency of functional simplicity and/or, cultural constructions that originate and spread mimetically histories, symbols, rituals and myths. This geometrical metaphor highlights an important consideration for the life world implications of dyads and the imperative struggle for dynamic equilibrium or balance through sustainable and complementary opposition'.
