ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at providing a picture of contemporary Moluccas, approximately 13 years after the signing of the Malino II peace treaty that officially marked the end of the conflict. It notices that in 2011 and 2012 there were at least three cases of mass violence which analyzed to illustrate the current situation in the archipelago. The wars in Rumahtiga in mid-2000 were mainly intended to take over the only state university in Maluku. The Muslim groups on campus, referring to the points of the Malino II peace treaty, asserted that the process of selection of Unpatti's leadership should be balanced between Christian and Muslim candidates. In February 2012, Muslim groups involves in bitter communal violence. Unlike the two previous cases of mass violence, the disturbance that took place in Pelauw was rooted in an inter-clan conflict in the village.
