ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes, explains, and evaluates regulatory norms applicable to cathedrals – the seat of a bishop – and how these are perceived and experienced. It discusses the legal framework by means of conversations, interviews, and correspondence with clergy and other staff at twenty-one cathedrals. The book offers an empirical exposition of cathedral law in the socio-legal tradition. It focuses on the role and significance of cathedrals in national life in modern England. The book explains the background to, and the reasons for, these norms, with particular reference to the report Heritage and Renewal, written by the Archbishops' Commission on Cathedrals 1994, appointed 'to examine the future role in Church and nation of the cathedrals of the Church of England and to make recommendations as to how best that role could be fulfilled, including proposals for their government and support'.
