ABSTRACT

This Chapter examines the precinct, the area surrounding the cathedral church: the designation, ownership, and regulation of the precinct (including any archaeological and human remains there); the regulation of housing for cathedral clergy and other staff, canonical houses, and 'close residence'; and cathedral security, including the use in some of cathedral constables. Under the Care of Cathedrals Measure 2011, Chapter must prepare a plan indicating the extent of the land surrounding the cathedral church of which the fee simple is vested in the cathedral's corporate body. The cathedral administrator must send the plan to the Cathedrals Fabric Commission. Security has been a persistent theme in the history of cathedrals, and the precincts of many are still bounded by fortified walls and gates. The aim of the Cathedral Constables Association is to promote the safeguarding of cathedrals through raising the professional profile of the Cathedral Constables and Yard Beadles employed by them.
