ABSTRACT

Worship and mission are central to cathedral life. The Church of England conducts its public worship in a formal manner: liturgy, the principal means by which worship is expressed and organised, consists of rites and ceremonies, or text and action. The Church of England teaches that: The visible Church of Christ is a congregation of faithful men, in the which the pure Word of God is preached, and the Sacraments be duly ministered according to Christ's ordinance in all those things that of necessity are requisite to the same. The sacraments ordained by Christ are baptism and Holy Communion and the effectiveness of their administration is not dependent on the worthiness of the minister who conducts them. The cathedral interviews reveal general satisfaction with norms on baptism and the Holy Communion. However, they disclose that some cathedrals have published baptismal policies but others do not.
