ABSTRACT

Contemporary dynamics and developments in Moroccan agriculture have been studied from a range of perspectives, for instance through the modernity/tradition dichotomy or in terms of technological advances, exports or competitiveness. However, researchers and agriculture sector actors alike tend to disregard the social conditions of farmers and labourers. This is clearly confirmed in the case of the Souss region. Souss is the country’s leader producer and exporter of numerous types of fruit and vegetable, including citrus fruit, tomatoes and bananas. It possesses the largest area of greenhouse cultivation in Morocco, and is the location for a substantial number of packaging factories and foreign investors (namely French and Spanish companies). However, issues related to agricultural labour and its economic and social implications are rarely taken into consideration.
