ABSTRACT

Scotland Somethinghasalreadybeensaidabouttheeffortsthatwere madetocollectfromoraltraditionthenativemusicofScotland andIreland,beforeithadbeenthoughtofforEngland,and incidentalcommentonthecharacterofthisCelticfolk-song hasfallenfromtimetotimebytheway.Butagooddealmore needstobesaidifanythinglikeanadequatepictureofwhat hasbeenfoundintheBritishIslesistobeofferedtoanethnomusicologistfromEuropeorAmerica.Inviewoftheprevious history,whichgoesbackwellintotheeighteenthcenturyforthe Celticcountries-theIsleofManhadalmostnothingtoshow tilltheendofthenineteenth-ithasbeenmoreurgenttoconcentrateonEnglishfolkmusic,butitisstillnecessarybywayof context,aswellascoherenceandcompleteness,toattemptsome accountofthemusicoftheCelticfringeasalsofornon-Celtic Scotland,thoughmoresummarilysinceascholarlyaccountis nowavailableinMrFrancisCollinson'sTheTraditionaland .NationalMusicofScotland(1966).Traditionalandnationalnote, notfolk,thoughthebookcertainlydealswithScottishfolk-song, butcomparedwithEngland,whereregionalismexercisesonly asmallinfluence,Scotlandpresentsatangledskeinoftraditions.
