ABSTRACT

The group work sessions provides a safe and structured environment that enables children to practise and develop new skills. The friendship group supports children who require additional support in developing and sustaining friendships, managing relationships, and dealing with conflict. The self-esteem group supports children who require additional support to develop confidence and self-esteem. The group work provides an opportunity to develop children's social and communication skills and enables some children to find their voice for the first time, while others can practise being less domineering towards other people. The group is held at the same time on the same day and in the same place each week. This consistency and predictability can reduce anxiety levels for the children and help them to feel safer in school. The group facilitator can ensure that certain concepts are introduced each week if they will support the development of new skills for the children.
