ABSTRACT

To understand all the inspiration present in every one of man's countless means of expression, to work with our hands, eyes, feet, stomachs, on the basis of our movements and not of statistical norms and rules created on the principle of what is most usual – this is the way forward to an architecture that is both varied and human. Jorn Utzon was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 9 April 1918 to Aage Oberg Utzon and Estrid Hauna Waleska Utzon; the second born of three brothers. The social and political shifts were reflected within the realm of art and architecture. In the late nineteenth century we saw the emergence of modernism that was to explode in the early twentieth century and influenced all the arts including of course architecture. Utzon's formative years in Aalborg witnessed a period of great industrial production, the town taking on the nickname of 'the town of smoking chimneys'.
