ABSTRACT

It is no accident that two words in the title of this chapter start with re-, that old prefix from the Latin meaning again and back. To reflect means 'to go back in thought ... or consult with oneself, a lovely dictionary definition of those conversations with yourself that we call thinking. To renew means to 'begin . . . anew, continue after intermission', which says that something dropped is picked up and carried forward once again. Let us see how thinking, discarded and forgotten at one time, is being taken up again in geography.
