ABSTRACT

Squares, we have asserted, are frequently considered to be works of art; they carry the meanings that an artist-designer wants to communicate to the world. The squares so designed self-consciously represent his or her work and values. They possess an intellectual esthetic quality. 1 To most people, the design of a square as an expression of an artist’s intent does not matter much, but to the cognescenti the designer’s story often transcends the importance of any other function that a square serves. They are interested in the design paradigm used and how the personal values of the designer are manifested in physical form.
