ABSTRACT
Almost all proposed designs for public spaces get contested by individuals and groups with a diversity of partisan interests. The objectives for a square to be a lively or a quiet place are often the subject of intense debate. While some squares were purposefully designed to be quiet, tranquil places of retreat, that was not the intention for other squares. They have simply turned out to be very quiet, unused and disappointing places. We can learn much from both.
